THE D.J.C. SPRING MEETING.

The Dunedin Jockey Club is out with. its •programme for its spring meeting, which as s&b down to take place on Wednesday, October 11, and Saturday, October 14. The * list ia practically the same as that of last

year, with the exoeptior that a raogt for two-year-ole1 c is inserted on the first day's card instead of the Trial Handicap, which formerly came up for decision. The juvenile event is evidently v?ut in by way of experiment, as the second day's card doss not contain a rac& of a simila* nature, and as the stake is only a small one it will probably receive local support only. Nc doubt those who are anxious to give their youngsters a public trial prior to taking them north ,vill appreciate the introduction of the race, but the writer has always bor-n strongly agaiu&t. the early racing of two-year-olds, and docs" not view its r.'aoe on. (I. c programme with iavour. Whether it ;s likely to be a financial success remains to be seen, but early two-year-old events were never a great success on D.J.C. programmes, and the number of two-year-olds in training at this end of the colony hardly justifies the inclusion of the race. The remainder of the events on the programme is fairly well endowed with prize-money, and should win a liberal response from hor»> owners. The principal events are the Mosgiol Handicap, of lOQsovs, one mile, and Electric Handicap, of 75sors. over six furlongs, both of which are on the first day's card; aid ! on the second* day the Ranfuriy Handicap. '"of lOOsovs, one mile, forms the chief event on the card. Two hurdle events., of GQsovs aoieee, and ttte usual Welters and Hack Handicaps also find a place on the bill. Nominations for. the majority of the events close oil Friday, September 22, and the fi" st , day's handicaps are due on October 2.
