BREEDING OF WINNERS.

Many well-performed torses are frequently said to-to halfbreds or vaguely referred to .as beinff of unknown breeding, owing to -the ' negligence, oi'some of our, «kl-time "breeders, whose eiample unfortunately is frequently followed by m«n who dabble in 'the "breeding of Worses «t the present time.' Some qf the winners at tha recent National 5 ineetin^ had some- fine performances, "bat '^nothing definite could ne learrit as to their breeding. Even Enm* killen, the -winner of the Grand National, has not a .place in the Stud Book. His dam i 3 .given as Nightingale, but whether it is the mare of that name which was a daughter of Somnus, or a Kalo mar© of the same nams, oar some other maxe^ the writer has been unable to discover. '- Ad--vanoe" pasta some light on the breeding of some of the minor winners at the meeting, when he recently said: that Captam Campbell, who is on General Babington s staff, "had a, good time at the National meeting with his hunters Makuri and Playfair, that raced consistently throughout the meeting, and finished up by running first and third in the Hunters' Plato, » mile and a-half on the flat, at a. differ«noe of 31b. Playfair is not unknown in Canterbury, having been bred there, and lasb season carried Mr W. G. Stead's colours. He is somewhat inbred, by Saracen (St. George— Fair Nell), which is at present doing stud duty in the "Wairarapa district, from Justice, by Winchester (son of St. -George— Miss 'Flat). Winchester was formerly known .as Manchester, under which name he -journeyed to Melbourne with Liverpool and Thunderbolt as a- member of ono of the late Hon. W. Robinson's team, tittle has been heard of him sinco he re turned, he having failed to make a name as a. §ire. Justioe is also the dam of Chivalry, •aid' it will not be surprising therefore if the Batter takes kindly to -the -jumping business. I am not. certain about Jhe breeding of Venus (dam of I Justioe), "but fancy, eke is a flaugkier o£ Albany; Mr W. "C. Webb, the old- time 'Canterbury -sportsman, who kept thcfTJush Inn'on the .\Riccaf ton road, and for many years trained there, -owned the MaftW mare 'Wave and; raced her progeny, also'iaiat of her daughters. In 1887 Wave, Venus (by- Albany), and' Veno (by Cadofsan)~ were J supposed .to visit Bundoora. but it is probable that"' the progeny (all fillies) anay, like the children in the opera "Pinafore," have got mixed up somewhat. Wave's filly was a chestnut, afterwards known as Diadem, which won the Timaru Guineas and C.J.C. Oaks in the colours of her breeder. Venus, had <a bay filly, which -was supposed to have died, but which may be identical with Justice, a. bay filly foaled in 1897. The writer resided in Canterbury at t.he time, and had several conversations about Wave and her progeny. Veno also produced! a bay filly, which was named Vanity, but which I <Jo not remember racing in this colony. ., She turned up in Tasmania, where she won the Hobarfc Cup in the name of Pauline for Mr J. B. Curran. a Tasmanian racing! official. She was returned f-s breeding unknown. A colt t>y Gaulus £rom Pauline is said to he one -of the smartest two-year-olds in training at Randwick. To return to RiccaTton, Makuri is the same, colour fts his sire, Country Boy, a grey horse, which stood in the Manawalu district. Country Boy was brought frem Australia, and is by imported Countryman {by Sfcoekwell), who stood at ihe Richmond) Stud in South Australia, ■where be left -several fillies, including Foot--Btep (dam of The Admiral, Surefoot, Fleet 'Admiral, Footbolt, and others). At the fWoodlands Hunt Club meeting, 'held on the Dannevirke course a year 1 ago, Makuri, then known as The Clown, won the Hunters' HuT-dlea, after a great finish with Captain Babingfcon's "CJnion Jack, which. W. H, jteith raced in Victoria this winter.
