GERMANY IN THE PACIFIC
•THE :XEW REGULATIONS. MELBOURXE, August 15. Mr Deakin has received a cable from the Hon. Mr Lyttelton (Colonial Secretary) giving the new regulations in connection with the Marshall Islands. Commercial firms - established there have to pay a trading tax of 6000 marks annually, but this will be the only tax on commerce. The Imperial Commissioner at Jaluit has been instructed to assist merchants to conclude leases of land from the natives for trading stations. A tax of 2000 marks yearly is to be imposed on ships engaged in trade on behalf of commercial firms not established in the islands. The Caroline Is'ands are to be thrown open from October 1, and the dues are to be those imposed according to an ordinance of August 8, 1904. BRISBANE, August 15. An officer of the German mail steamer Prince Waldemar has admitted that the 23 Chinese stowaways who were found on the last trip of the vessel have not been returned to Hongkong, but have been imprisoned at Herbertsholie, having been sentenced to two years' hard labour. Six have since died. "
