MANAWATU RACES

First Day. — Wednesday, Aeiul 5.

The Manawatu autumn, meeting was opened in glorious weather, but the attendance was not up to last year. Lord Plunket was amongst the guests The going was very good. The raoe for the Manawatu Stakes aroused great enthusiasm. Achilles did not get away well, and floundered a bit m the early stages of the race, whereas Machine Gun was full of running, and made a magnificent dash at the entrance of the straight, which made it impossible for the chestnut to get iip with him although galloping his fastest at the finish. The totalisator takings were £585 less than last year, the respective figures being £10,536 and £9951. Kesults: —

First Handicap Hack Hurdles, of 75sovs. One mile and three-quarters. — Ros-eplot, 10.0, 1; Wind, 10.13, 2; Valima, 9.4, 3. Also started: Handsome Rose 10.3, In the Van 9.2, Gipsy Jack 9.0, Whataroa 9.0. A promising race was spoilt from the first hurdle, where Handsome Rose crashed down, and sent his jockey skidding along the turf. The disaster was but a prelude to that which took place at the second hurdle, when Gipsy Jack, who was leading, and In the Van turned over the fence. The race degenerated into a contest between- Wind and Roseplot, and, after changing places twice, Roseplot slipped out from the distance, and won by three lengths. Valima and Whataroa tailed away. Time, 3min 21 4-ssec. Dividends £7 16s and £1.

Machine Gun was inclined to be frisky at the post, and when the barrier rose caused Sir Tristram to lose a length. The start otherwise was flawless. Stronghold and Achilles moved away fast, but were speedily overhauled by Sir Tristram, who took up the running with Stronghold, Machine G<un following them, a length away, along the back stretch. At the top of the bend Achjlles, who was last, flashed up. Machine Gun was the first to show his nose in front, and slipped in on to the rails. Achilles, when in the straight, followed with a sudden spurt, which left Sir Tristram and Stronghold hopelessly in tho rear. The Hotchkiss colt was full of running, and, notwithstanding the sustained challenge from Achilles, streaked home with a bare length to the good. Sir Tristram was six lengths away, with Stronghold's nose on his flanks. Time, lmm 14 l-ssec. Dividend, £t 11s.
