THE SOUTHLAND RACING CLUB.
The leading spirits of the Southland Racing Club are e-videutiy determined to have a racecourse which will be a credit to that body, and with that object "in view have latterly been expending a considerable sum of money in carrying out further improvements on their course. Twenty-two new stalls have been erected, thus making accommodation for no less than 67 horses in the saddling paddock. This completely places in the sha.de the accommodation procurable at many more pietontious courses, where, in bad weather, the lack of shelter is often unpleasantly brought under the notice of horse owners. The eld members' paddock has been absorbed into the saddling paddock, and a new members' enclosure has replaced th-e land required for the improvements. The steeplechase track has be-en improved by being levelled. and the take-off at the different fences made safer ; whilst a new training track on the insido of the cou'-s,a proper ie nearing completion. The main track has been put in good order, and the- requirements of owners and ivain^rs studied as far as possible. A good deal of new fencing has been erected, and several other miner improvements, havo fcpfe-n effected on the cour=e. including accommodation which did not previously o'rist for the comfort of outside patrons. Altogether the club appears to be making laudable efforts to make its couv£c and mooting as pleasant a.s possible for its patrons, and if tlTe> financial results of sora? of (he future gatherings prove as successful as those which have been recently experienced, no doubt the prize money hung up will make owners cast desiring eyes on the
stakes, and consorjii-ontly cause them to nominate e\-en more liberally m the future* than they havo don-e in the past.
