TOMAHAWK

The occasions upon -which the dairy farming community at Tomahawk are taken out of their ordinary routine aTe few and far between, and v.'hen they do happen the events are of more than ordinary interest. On the 19th ult. the whole district was more than delighted, the cause of their joy being the fiftieth, auniversary of the wedding clay of Mr and Mrs Alexander Mathieson. Tits day was fine. In the morning there was a reunion of the family, consisting of three sons and five daughters, who had come from different parts of Otago. The occasion was memorable. After breakfast Mr Morris was in attendance, and photographed the group on the lawn and also the old couple. In the afternoon some 70 or 80 friends from far and near assembled to offer their congratulations and to rejoice with those who rejoiced. A most enjoyable day was spent, and as a. great many " o'cl identities" were present old battles were fought over again. Everything possible was done by one and all to make the day worthy of the occasion. The wine cup was pledged, and long life and happiness to Mr and Mrs Mathieson was the prayer of every heart. Numerous congratulatory letters were received, m whicn a. number of the writers referred to Mr and Mrs Matlneson as ideal colonists and most excellent neighbours, and of how miich Mr Mathieson had done to make tho district what it was. On the following day a great number of their grand children were present, and also most of the children of the district. It is needless to Fay that ojo and all appreciated Mr and MrF Mathisscui's hospitality, and returned feeling they had batn at the celebration of something to bo remembered. Mt and Mrs Mathieson went on their honeymoon trip from Edinburgh to Meibourno in 1P54. On arriving there Mr Matbieson thought it might be as well to stay, and_ undeitook a job of erecting a sawmill, one of the first in that city. After remaining there a year he caught the gold fever, and exploited the Ovens district for four years successfully. In October. 1559, he took ship for Otago, anrl on arriving in Dunedin he joined his brother John (now deceased; in fanning at Giant's Biaes.

After some years they dissolved partnership, Mr John going to Portobdlo and Mr Alexander to Tomahawk, wJicre he carried on dairy farming up till 1890, vhen he retired from business, and, leaving one of his sons in chaige, accompanied by Mis Matmeson he revisited the Old Country. Bcnh Mr and Mrs Mathieson are in excellent health, and it is the siverre wi=h of all who know them that they may do more than yet celebrate their diamond wpddmg.
