«. CAUSED BY A ROCKSLIDE. A COLLIERY DESTROYED. OVER ONE HUNDRED LIVES LOSTSIXTY MEN BURIED ALIVE. EXTENSIVE FLOODS THREATENED. OTTAWA, April 30. A disaster, caused by a rockslide, destroyed a olfeery it Frank, "North-west Canada, killing over 100, chiefly women and children, and entombing 20 miners. The valley was violently shaken at daybreak, and this was followed immediately by an eruption on Turtle Mountains, overlooking the town. Millions of tons of rocks were thrown up, covering the entrance to the mine, burying buildings and covering all persons outside the workings. Some reports state that the country for 20 miles around is covered with lava, and scoria. Tlie Crow's Nest River is blocked by lava, and a new crater is ejecting lava. The latest reports from Frank state that the top of the mine is burning. The night shift, numbering 60, are inside. The river is dammed back to a he'ghb of 100 ft, and threatens to flood a largo area. Of the 17 miners entombed two were suffocated. The rest escaped through the debris uninjured. May 1. Tlio deaths at the Frank disaster numbered 56. The damage is estimated at £300,000.
