ODDS AND ENDS

The light-weight jockey, E. Carter, and the cross-country jockey, M. Mooney, have left the Messrs Miller. Mooney is the best cross-coun-try rider in Australia in my opinion. He met with a bad accident owing to a fall .off Error at Flemington on New Year's Day, and it was over that accident that a disagreement has arisen between his employers and Mooney. He will in future principally ride for R. H. Frew's stable — a powerful jumping one. Frew trains Lord Roberts and a number of other good jumpers. — [Since the above was written, I <hear that Mooney is staying on with the Messrs Miller.] James Redfearn has taken up at Caulfield three Malvolio two-year-olds, all of which look like galloping, especially the brother to Malton and the brother to Sport Royal. The unlucky two-year-old Latchkey has been sent back to her owner at the Tabletop stud for a spell. Mr R. Orr, owner of Maltster, lost his wife by death on Sunday last. Mrs Orr was the mother of Mrs James Scobie. Mr James Redfearn has also lost his third daughter, who died last Saturday. The flood waters last week did damage to the Williamstown racecourse to the extent of abcot £800, and the meeting arranged for Easter Monday was held on the Moonee Valley course. An application for a jockey's license from George Anwin was on Thursday last considered by the V.R.C. Committee. Anwin was told to make another application on July 1 next. The committee declined to grant a jockey's license to Leslie Harming. The conditions of the next Melbourne Cup are. to remain as last year. The V.R.C. Committee met on Thursday last, and so decided. The event next November will be a handicap sweepstakes of 30sovs each, with 5000sovs added-; second, lOOOsovs; third, 500sovs; two miles. The committee held over consideration of the Maribyrnong Plate conditions, but decided to leave the Ascotvale Stakes of 1903 a sweepstakes of 20sovs each, with 500sovs added; the Sires' Produce Stakes of 1903 a sweepstakes of lOsovs each, with 560sovs added; the Derby of 1903 a sweepstakes of 25sova each, with lOOOsovs added ; the Oaks of 1903 a sweepstakes of lOsovs each, with 400sovs added; and the St. I><?ger Stakes of 1901, a sweepstakes of 20sovs each, with 500sovs added. The committee also decided on the programme of the Grand National meeting, to be held on July 5, 9, and 12. It will bo on identical lines to that of last year. The Grand National Hurdle Race will be » sweepstakes of 15sovs each, with lOOOsovs added, three miles, and the Grand National Steeplechase, a sweepstakes of 20sovs each, with 1500sovs added, about three miles and a furlong. Portion of the private track of the Messrs Miller at Mill Park was washed away by the floods last week. Colonel Campbell, owner of Chelsea, and Mr J. Leek, who won the Caulfield Cup with Ingliston, are both laid up. Mr Leek's illness is lather serious. It has been decided to retire Sir Foote from the turf, and he will be prepared during the coming month for next season's stud work. Mr C. L Macdonald has made arrangements with Mr J. Macdonald, of Mnngiebundie, to race the two-year-old brother to Bonnie Chiel and Kinglike. The colt, who is a splendid youngster, was to be sent to Melbourne with Wakeful after the A.J.C. meeting. Falcon, who was injured in the Hurdle Race at the Ballarat Miners' Tuif Club meeting on Easter Mondpy, had to be shot. The princinal event at this meeting went to Wood Deer, who is by Deerswood (son of Newminstar). Silver Forest, by Forest King (son of Maribyrnong), won the two leading events at the Queensland Turf Club's Easter meeting, held on Saturday and Monday last.
