It seems probable that there will be some pigeon-shooting in the Waipori Bush this year. At present there are a good many there, and if they stay until the shooting season sets in, there may be a few very fair bage made. The Gore Mounted Rifle Corps, numbering 74 men, was sworn in on Friday evening. Waimakariri. — Mr H. Wheeler secured a fine basket of 11 trout while fishing at the mouth of the Waimakariri on Saturday, 3rd inst. The totals weight of the fish was about 301b, the heaviest scaling 41b. Ashley. — Owing to the slight fall of rain on the hills during the past months, the River Ashley has become dry under the railway bridge. A correspondent states that there are thousands of young trout in the pools left here and there in the riverbed, and the Acclimatisation Society's ranger, Mr R. Darling, is busy removing them to the stream running opposite Coldstream, where the water never fails. The large trout have endeavoured to reach deep water.
