Notes from Reefton. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
EEEFTON, February 28. The Manager of the Keep-it-Dark mine reports as follows: — "During the month the usual stoping has been carried on in No. 2 and No. 3 levels. The reef maintains its size. There is no difference in quality, but I expect an improvement in No. 3 level. I have just finished filling in the stopes. They are" all filled close up, and I have started driving in No. 3 level. The west battery returns for February are as f o" lows :—902: — 902 tons have been crushed, giving 6160z amalgam >and 2140z lOdwt retorted gold, and the cyanide returns are 1420z Sdwt gold from 750 tons of tailings treated."
March 5.
The Buller dredge return is 220z 4dwt for 120 hours- work. The dredgernaster reports that the ground is becoming solid and the gold improving. Work on the Consolidated dredge has been suspended for the past fortnight owing to the breaking of a part of the new suction gear. The defective part has now been renewed, and dredging was resumed this afternoon at 4 o'clock.
The Manager of the Big Eiver reports that the crosscut in No. 6 level has been driven a further distance of 15ft. The ground is soft, and favourable for a reef. We have sunk 7ft on the stone in No. 1 level. The stone shows a little gold.
