IN VERCARGILL MARKETS.
(From Oun Own (Jorhekpondenj'.) Invebcapgilt,, August 3.
The markets in Southland have, generally speaking, been very quiet during the pasi. week. There have been no sales of wheat reported, nor have 1 heard of any offering. The farmers who havo not yet threshed are holding off until spring, when it is expected the market will fuliy I'cocver itself, as our local milleis only hold about four months' stocks. The oat market has continued inactive, save for a slight demand Irom Napier, and quotations remain unchanged. 'The small quantity coming forward from farmers, purchased at much lower rates than the stocks at present held in lnvcrcsrgill and the Hind", and sold immediately by timid holders, still exercises a distiubing influence on the values of parcels held over from the general lipneshiig. Inquiries from the north seem to indicate "a demand from all quarters very shcrtl.", and merchants generally anticipate improved prices. Advices from Australia point to a batter feeling in the Victorian markets, and as their own supplies of Algerians aie, according to reports, being exhausted, it may fairly be expected that an inquiry from that quarter will spring up shortly. Seed oats arc in fair dem?)id afc ~2s Gd for prime sparrowbills, 2s 9d to :3s for Sutherland. I*,1 *, duns, black and white Tartars. The shipments from the Bluff since Jasb report have been as follows: — For Gisbcrne, 300 sacks; for Wellington, 525 sacks; for Napier, 6775 sacks; for New Plymouth, 25 sack»; for Auckland, 50 sacks; for Australia, nil. 'lhere is much inquiry for perennial ryegrass and Italian rye. Sales have been rcpoited at 3s 8d to 3s 9d for 261b seed, and up to 4s for prime heavy perennial for BluK. Italian I'yegra.ss ia very scarce, nnd no sales have been ma:ie. Quotations (nominal), 4s 4d upwards. Timothy is very dull of sale at 22s and 2.1s per cwfc. Small lines of extra prime chaff have changed hands during the week at £3 ss. Potatoes and onions are not selling so well as they ivere a little time ago, but holdeis of potatoes are still asking £8. Flour is quoted at .?12; oatmeal, £12 30s; pollard, £3 10s; and bran, £2 10s."
