SALE OF HORSED AT GLENKENICH STATION.

Mr W Quin reports as follows :— I held one of the most successful salei ever known in the district on account of Mr J. "R. Mackenzie, of Glenkenich station, on Thursday last. There wa3 a large attendance from all parts of the district, besides buyers from Ashburton, Oamaru. Dunedin, Taieri, Southland, the Lakes, and Lawrence. The vendor had the stock well arranged, and while not got up expressly for show, were in pleasing condition. Mr Mackeniie has for many years had his name associated with the leading breeders of draught horses in Otago, and it is due to his enterprise that breeders in this district have been so well catered for in the way of superior stallion". As a sire, Lord Lyon deserves a "record reign." He has produced more stallions, considering the quality of the ruafes /eryert, than any other New Zealand-bred sire. Hi« stock was always like himself— well to the front m tne

show rings of Otago ; and at the sale held on Thursday las f . no better argument in his favour can be produced than the fact that five two-year-old geldings averaged £25 12s 6ii, and seven two and three-yeav-old fillies £30 6p, all sired by Lyon. The imported hortes Richmond and St. Alexander, both brought into the district by Mr Mackenzie, have also exceedingly good rocsrds as stock-getter?. At the sale a Richmond filly was passed in at £61, whil" another was sold at £32. The bay yearling colt by St Alexander met with a buyer in Mr Robert Alcorp, of Ashbnrton, at the satisfactory figure of 70gs. The o^lt, Pa^rl's Pride, also by St. Alexinder, and Lord Lyon were both passed in at lOOga each. The light and harness horses were all offered under fair c >mpotition, and considering tbe weakness of the market for hacks, &c, the very fair averase prir-e of £11 30s was reached. As anticipated, i'O trouble \va3 experienced in placing the draughts ; in f ict the bidding all through for the heavy sort-, was rushed, and even up to the conclusion of the pale the demand was keen and spirited.
