ALEXANDRA.

June S9.— The weather still continues finefrosty nights and .mornings, with beautiful sunny . middays. , Petty Thieving. —l am forry to s'ata that this '. Kortof thing is being carried on to a great extent here. The night prowlers play havoc among the clotheslines. It is a pity they cannot be caught ,' red-handed, and made to suffer the full penalty of the law. In a small country village like this one would think that such a thing would be unknown. Public Meeting.— A public meeting of ratepayers was held in the Town Hall on Monday i night to discuss the proposal now before the borough to borrow a certain amount to supply the town with light and water. There have been two previous meetiugs, and a poll taken twice, on the same subject. The ratepayers are naturally beginning to grumble at such bungling and waste of lime. That is the reason of the meeting on Monday evening being so meagrely attended, even after the boll had been rung only 13 ratepayers being present. Donnbybrook.— We had a taste of the oldtime fair on Wednesday evening, the row starting in one of the hotels, and it was Gome outside 1 " It lasted for a couple of hours, and eventually wound up with the combatants getting cheap lodgings for the night in our local lock-up. . School Holidays —The school has brc>en up for two weeks' holidays. There is no sliding or skating for the youngsters, however," on account ! of the mildness of tbe season.

Debating Society.— On Thursday even'ng this society met again, and had a very interesting and instructive debate. The room was crowded to the door. The_first part of the evening was taken up with the debate on ".Dr Jim." Mr Carroll defended Dr Jim wel', and received a round of applause. Mr Walker spoke against the raid, and in replying got homo with a couple of good remarks. Mr Grimstoue and Mr Gloss also spoke agiiinit Dr Jim. Mr Grimatone read the journal, which was union appreciated, and altogether the evening proved too Bbort.

The dredge Eureka is to make a start to-day. Once she is fairly started and going we expect to hear of some good returns. Messrs Paik's Manuherikia dredge is expected to make a start soon also.
