HILLEND.
Junb'27.— The weather has been during the last month (from a farmer's point of view) all that could be desired; and owiDg to that and the bountiful harvest and good prices, one meets with nothing bub smiling f»ce3 and pleasant' words. There are iuquiriea after land in this' quarter, and sinco the Manuka Island estate has been entrusted to the management of Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. as agents, and judiciously advertised, a vacant section will soon be a thing of the past.
Large Yield.— Since writing last month another good return of wheat has been made known —viz , that of Mr John Campbell, which went GO bushels to the acre. Who would not smile with such a result as that to cheer him ?
Presentation.— On Thursday evening, 18th inst., the residents of this district met in the school to drink tea 'aud bid farewell to Miss Malcolm and her sister. During the evening the chairman of committee, on behalf of the residents, presented Miss Malcolm and her sister, not with the proverbial 'purse of sovereigns," but with a most useful bundle of bank notes to spend at their o\yu sweet will. Miss Malcolm and her sis.ter replied thanking the residents in most feeling term:-, and though they leave us after a stay of aix years, our best wishes will follow them.
SCHOOL.— Oiir school is at present closed for the winter holidays, and it was understood that the board would effect some very necessary' repairs during that time and before the advent of our new ts-acher ; but so far nothing has been done. The committee will have to send a gentle reminder to the " powew that be." RdAns.— The roads are Very much cut up at present, and require attending to badly. The county council is about to spend £200 in metalling, and if they will only start the work at Hillond, as they ought to do according to the laws of gravitation, the very metal will co-operate, as weight is bound to work down.
