OTAUTAU.
June 23. — In local news there is at present nothing of aDy great import to record, but with •regard to that unfailing topic the weather it may bo remarked that one frosty night succeeds another with unfailing regularity, and had it not been for the small downpour of rain about a week ago most of the tanks would have been empty. Although such extreme weather cuts the Brass, sleek of all descriptions seem to thrive better than in a wet sleety winter, and in is undoubtedly more healthy for the human family also AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL —Ploughing is being pushed ahead, and fortunately the ground is being fumed over dry, and if it continues so for another month a large acreage of wheat will be sown. Turnips are being eaten off without ! the sheep standing in mud, which is a great benefit to both stock and land. Concert.— The Good Templars of Otautau held | a well-attended and most eD joyable concert last week. Medical — Dr Graham has left here and started practice in Invercargill, so in the meantime we have no- medico, but' as this district offers a splendid opening for * doctor, it is to be hoped a successor niay soon arrive upon the scene. Dr Nelson, of Riverton, however, pays us a weekly visit. >> School.— As a large "small generation" has arisen at thi* end of the Wairio district, which is . several miles from both Wairio and Otautau townships, a meeting of those interested in applying, for the erection of a school in that vicinity .took place last Saturday night in Mr Richard James s house. The proper authorises will in due com se be 'communicated with, and will no doubt samtion the scheme, as there is at present a number of children debarred from enjoying the benefits of our educational system on account of the distance they reßidefrom a school.
