Mrs Le Lievre, Merton, waited on the counoil in reference to some land fronting seotion 22, block 11, Waikouaiti, and asked for permission to occupy the same. After Cr Porteous had explained the position of the land and the circumstances surrounding it, the council resolved that Mrs Le Lievre bo granted permission to oocupy the fronfcige to her seotion— section 22, block 11, Waikouaiti survey district— only, and during the pleasura of the counoil. PETITIONS. Messrs R. Jtfferson, W. Olaxton, ana" 13 other ratepayers in. the North-East Valley riding, petitioned the counoil to metal the • Waitati - Wakari road, from the saddle to the •' first; bridge, -and point* ing out that the formation being now com* plated, to a certain extent, to, leave it in its present condition would render it almost impassable in wet weather, as it would not have time to get thoroughly set, and the traffic would be forced on to the water tables, thus rendering them useless ; also, there being a good quarry on the roadside close to the bridge, they felt certain that it would be metalled at a reasonable cost, as it was now in as good condition for metalling as it would be later on, aDd that if , the work was not done now the road would require re-forming and the money already spent would thus be thrown away,— The petitioners to be informed that the present contract had exhausted the Government vote, and the finances of the riding would nob permit the council to comply with the request at present. Messrs M. M'Donald, J. M'Cullough, and ■23 other ratepayer^ fa bhe Lo wet Hirbour district petitioned the council to have, the road made through Mr Charles Smith's land, as surveyed, and the old roads closed and transferred in exchange for the new road, and that the road round the quarry b?. proseeded with at once, as they had not so much as a footpath. The Swamp roadline being all but perpendicular in many places, as well as rugged, was impassable, and from the'faob of its having been laid off on a wrong ridge the road could not, without a great deal of expenditure in reduoing the grade, be made even barely passable, and this with only one-third of a load. The natural line was partly through M'Callum's property to a ridge with a grade on his (Mr Douglas's) land leading to the table land. He asked the council to give their attention to the matter. — The application was referred to the inspector, to furnish a report and a sketch of the two roads at the next meeting of the coune'l.
