July 3.— The ordinary meeting of the Road Board, held on Saturday, was attended by all the members. The rate collector reported that he was compelled to sue four defaulters, who had c jnfessed judgment. Three had paid up, but in the fourth case the rates were still unpaid. Messrs A. Clark and Sinclair's request to put in a culvert opposite their property, as the present one is too small, was granted. Mr R. Hall appeared to request that part of the road at Wickliff Bay be formed, as he could not get out at high water. To stand over till next meeting. The Inspector reported that the chairman and himself had examined Mr David Hughes's property and found it impracticable. To spend money on it would be of no use. It was resolved to try and take a track along the beach instead. After some discussion, it was decided to call for frebh tenders for the position of collector and inspector, Mr Raynbird having applied for reconsideration on the ground that the tender which had been accepted was not in conformity with the specifications. A conditional offer by Mr Milne to contribute 10s towards the work on the road at his place was accepted. Mr Cross gave notice that at next meeting he would move that a rate of }d in the pound be levied on all rateable property in the district. A letter was received from Mr J. Green, M H.R , on the subject of charitable aid. The secretary of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote intimating that the road board's contribution amounted to £103 3s 6_d. It was decided to procure a list of the contributions of all local bodies, members being of opinion that some bodies escaped payment altogether. Letters were received from Dr W. Brown and A M'Cabb, intimating that they were no longer liable for rates for properties specified. In reply to a request from the school committee, it was resolved that the board cannot see its way to alter its decision ?<j the beach track at Hooper's Inlot. The Inspector reported, concerning the road leading from Latham's old store to the Main Top road, Portobello, that both ends of the road were on the board's property, but the centre was on Mr Ridley's private property. Accounts to the amount of £121) 18s 8d were passed for payment.
