SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting held on Tuesday. 9th August, was attended by Messrs G. W. Williams (Chief Commissioner), C. Cowan, A. Kinross, and J. M'lntyre. T. D. A. Moffett applied for permission to cut a track along the chain reserve on the Tomoporakau stream to give access to his property. — Referred to the Southland County Council, a resolution being passed to the effect that the board saw no objection to the application. W. Ogilvie applied to purchase section 41, block 11, Mabel Hundred, stating that the sawmill timber had all been cut off by H. A. Massey, who had held it with other areas. He handed in a letter from Mr Massey surrendering the section. — Surrender accepted, improvements to be valued and section opened for selection. W. F. Ward applied for a refund of five months' interest on his section in Hokonui, he having completed purchase within 30 days after the last rent clay. — Referred to the head office. W. W. Hailes' application to complete purchase of section 616, Hokonui, also for a homestead right on runs 135 and 135.1 were granted. The Hokonui Railway and Coal Company applied to purchase part of section 306, Forest Hill Hundred. — To bo offered at auction at 103 per acre, and protection to tramway granted for seven years. An offer of G. Williams to lease the north end of section 38, block IV, Campbelltown Huudred, was referred to the Railway department.

E. Butler opplied for sections b'4 and 65, block 11, Winton Hundred. — Already applied for. R. Eskine was granted leave to complete purchase of section 4, block I, Alton district.

An application from J. F. Chalmers and S. Allison to lease 50 acres of the coal reserve on section 143, Wairio, was referred to the chief commissioner.

With reference to the application of H. Templeton to take up some unsurveyed land in the Oteramika Hundred, the head office intimated that the land would be gianted after roads had been reserved.

An application from M'Callum and Co. for the right to cut the sawmill timber on sections 87 and 90, block I, Oteramika Hundred, was granted subject to the usual conditions. The ranger was instructed to report as to a suitable area for a recreation reserve in the Hokonui district.

In reference to the case of J. B. Basstian, the Surveyor-general wrote :—ln: — In reply to your memorandum of 29th April, I agree with you that there is no middle course and the Minister considers that the section must either be forfeited (which has been done) or permit the lessee to make good his default, ■which would be to open the door to all persons in similar circumstances. The Minister has no discretion in the matter of allowing the land to be offered with part improvements after it has been forfeited. — The Chairman said that the letter, which had been mislaid, was in reply to the board's representation that Sir Basstian should be allowed part of his improvements. The head office intimated that the Minister for Lands had decided that the proposals contained in the minute accompanying the chairman's memo, of the 4th inst. in reference to roads iv Croydon Bush might be carried out.— The Chairman said the proposal was that a road should betaken through Mi- White's section so as to give access to the sections at the b:irk. Mr White's solicitor had been iufurinud of thu decision, and the sui veyor had been instructed to lay off the road with as little iucouvenience to Mr White as possible. . Jessie S. Stewart and Catherine Forbes were granted leave to complete purchase of deferred payment sections 15 to 18, block 11, Longwood district ; to have separate title* given. The following applications were granted : — To complete puichase: J. Tippett, section 42, block XIX, Winton Hundred ; M. M'Carthy, section (528, Hokonui ; R. H. M. Hailes, section 615, Hokonui. For cash : M. Condon, section 20, Balfour Village ; W. Tillie, sections 10 to 12, block XIX, Hirstfield. On deferred payments : J Tovbet, sections 6i and 65, Winton Hundred; J Melviu, jun., section 50, block VII, Inveicargill Hundred. On perpetual lease : F. Teeofsky, jun., section 19, l'ahia Village ; Elizabeth Ruddick, section K>, block 111, Seaward Bush. Transfer of perpetual lease section 14, block XVII, Longwood, from A. A. Nickle&s to his mother was sanctioned. T. M'Kay applied to purchase on perpetual lease a strip of land at the end of section 1, block XII, Centre Hill, lying between his land and Hamilton Burn creek, at which he wished to water his 6tock in the summer.— The land being included in a run leased for an absolute term, the applica1 tion could not be entertained.
