THE SOUTHLAND CHAMPION PLOUGHING MATCH.

The eighteenth annual contest took place on Wednesday, the 10th inst., on the farm of Mr J. Brass, Wallacetown Crossing. The weather was against the match, but it was nevertheless successful in every respect. There were, all told, 26 competitors, no fewer than 14- of whom were entered ia the champion class, and a good number of tho ploughmen came from a considerable distance — in one instance from the Taieri ; while Riversdale, Fortrose, and Mataura were likewise represented. A start was made at 10 a.m., and most of the lots were finished about 4- p.m. The champions had a lea paddock to themselves, and a finer piece of ground for the purpose they could scarcely have desired — fairly level, with a soil that lent itself to the building up of sightly furrows. The ploughing was judged by Messrs W. Paget (TuturauJ, A. Drysdale, and J. Lindsay, and they had great difficulty in making the awards, the competition being very keen. It will be noted that district ploughmen were very successful. Mr J. A. Mitchell maintained his reputation as "the only" secretary. Following is the PRIZE LIST.
