THE FACTORY ACT IN CONNECTION WITH WOOLSHEDS, &c.

Mr W. L. Philp, secretary of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association, has kindly placed the following correspondence on this subject at our disposal : — Department of Agriculture, Wellington, N.Z., August 12th, 1892. The Secretary, Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, Dunedin. Sir, — I have the honour by direction of the Minister for Agriculture to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 30th ultimo, and to inform you that there is evidently a misunderstanding as regards the application of the "Factories Act, 1891," to woolbhecls, &c. The attached circular issued by the Bureau of Industries will make the point clear. I shall feel obliged if you will give the circular the utmost publicity. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, John D. Ritchie, Secretary.

Bureau of Industries, Wellington, August 9, 1892. The Inspector of Factories. Sir, — There appears to be some anxiety on the part of farmers and station-owners as to their woolsheds, &c, being considered factories. Tho woolsheds, barns, milking sheds, &c, of producers on farms, stations, or runs are not to be considered factories. Woolsheds or premises used by exporters, agents, and others in pressing or preparing wool for manufacture are factories. I am, Sir, yours respectfully, Edward Tregear, Chief Inspector.
