SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting held on Tuesday, 26' th July, was attended by Messrs Cowan (in the chair), M'lntyre and Kinross.

Alexander M'Donald, of Gore, was granted permission to complete the purcliai-e of section?, block IX, Wendon district.

Almao asked that sections 2(J and 27, block X, east of Grove Bush, be withdrawn from the State forests in order that api>lieant .and others should have an opportunity of applyirg for them. — It was decided to recommend to the Government the advisableness of withdi awing the land from State forest proclamation. John Egerton offered to purchase 200 acres at East Winton at 10s per acre. — Applicant was informed that the land had not yet been abandoned by the New Zealand Pine Company. James Popham offered LI a year for the lease of 5£ acres of a reserve at Hirstfield village. — It was decided to offer the area at auction. H. Dundas wrote in connection with W.

Robertson's application for three acres in Reserve No. 78, Horseshoe Bay, Stewart Island, that he valued the land at 15s per acre.— lt was decided to offer the lease at auction, the upset to be 5s per year. Joseph Puller, Pukerau, asked the board to submit to auction 58 acres adjoining section 31, Waikaka.— lt was decided to offer the lease for sale at Is per acre. Robert Troup, Waikaka Valley, wrote in reference to his right to valuation on account of a tence erected on a half-caste reserve, section 33 block IV, Aparima Hundred.— lt was decided to inform applicant that the terms on which the land had been held forbade valuation for improvements.

John Sinclair wrote complaining that no deferred-payment thirds had been expended on his land, section 39, block XXXI, Wiuton.— The Ranger having stated that if applicant did not get a drainage outlet made he would have to give up the area, it was resolved to refer the matter to the Southland County Council. A. Butler applied to transfer section 47, block 11, Seaward Bush township, to Denis O'Brien. — It was decided to inform applicant that when he paid arrears due the application would be entertained. William Tillie applied to purchase sections 10, 11, and 12, block IX, Hirstfield, and to lease sections b' and 9, Municipal reserve, adjoining.— lt was decided to inform applicant that section 6 was not available. The other sections were granted.

The Ranger reported that he had inspected section 12, block 4, Waikaia, containing 200 acres, and that almost every acre was suitable for cultivation.—lt was decided to recommend the Government to declare the land open at 15s per acre. James Hamilton Smith applied to transfer section 3, block V, Centre Hill, to William Tulloch, of Mossburn. — It was resolved to grant the application on the lap§e of a month An anonymous writer stated that there were settlers in the district who were holding more than 50 acres of Crown land. — The Chairman stated that it was a pity tho writer did not send along the nanies of the persons referred to. The following applications to complete purchase were granted :— W. F. Ward, sections 647 and (>4B, Hokonui; Donald Mackintosh, section C 4, blook I, Seaward Bush ; Patrick Dooley, section 32, block 11, Oteramika. A telegram was received from the head office asking if there was any objection to the opening of the whole of Stewart Island under the act of 1887 for optional selection, and if objection to the whole, would there be any to the shores of Paterson Inlet being opened, say, one or two miles back. — It was stated that the whole of the island outside of the surveyed land was under State Forest jurisdiction, and it was decided to inform the head office that there was no objection to the whole of the island being opened for sale under the act of 1887, care being taken to protect mineral and sawniilling interests The following applications were granted :—: — Cash : L. Finnerty, section 1, block XVII, Longwood, 290 a ; Robert Henderson, sections 81 and 82, block V, Invercargill Hundred. Perpetual leases : A. A. Nickless, section 14, block XVII, Longwood ; James Newton, sections 3 and 4, block XVH, Longwood ; Thomas Scully, section 2, block XVII, Longwood ; Sabina Scully, section 12, block XVII, Longwood ; Patrick E. Forde, section 11, block XVII, Longwood ; John Arthur, section 15, block XVII, Longwood ; Henry Ward, sections 5, b", and 7, block XVII, Longwood ; W. J. Gray, section 13, block XVII, Longwood ; J. and W. Arthur, sections 8 to 10, block XVII, Longwood ; W. Scott, section 729, Hokonui.
