Royal Star going to the front led from Quartus, Swift, and Workington until well round the turn into the straight. Here Pioneer, Reve dOr, Surbiton, and Vasistaß formed the second division, and considering his uncertain temperament, it was unfortunate for the firstnamed that he Bhould always have been in want of room. The upshot was that he in turn flattered and dismayed hia partisans until the distance, where it waß palpable that he would have to depend upon the chance of a situation. Even thia berth w<»a missed, and in the oonfusion created by Reve dOr going from one Bide of the course to the other, Pioneer lost third honours to Workington by; not more than a head or a neok. In fairness it can be mentioned that Workington likewise suffered by the manner in whioh Reve dOr went from right to left, and although no objection was lodged, the stewards called M. Cannon over the coals and expressed their belief that he had interfered both with Workington and Vaßiatas. The sudden challenge of the Frenoh horse created almost as much oonsternation as when Goldseeker got home last year, and so stoutly did he fight out the last 100 yds that Reve dOr only stalled him off by a neck. Time, 2min 12860. Value of the stakes, £1520.
