MOSGIEL.

June 9.— The best attended meeting of the Mosgiel Literary and Debating Society yet held took place in the Mosgiel schoolhouse on Friday last. The meeting was opened by Rev. W. Will offering up a short prayer, and afterwards the president (Rev. Mr M'Kerrow) introduced Mr Wilson, M.A., (O.G H S.) who was to give a lecture on " Tennyson's Idylls." The members anticipated a great treat, and were in no way disappointed, for I am happy to siy Mr Wilson even surpassed all expectations by the excellent lecture which he delivered. To those who have read the works of Tennyson, the lecture must have teen exceedingly enjoyable. The lecture was so written as to draw even the most inattentive listener along with it from start to fiuish with unflagging interest. Every word was spoken in a distinct yet not loud voice, and in the occasional pieces recited by the lecturer all seemed to feel as if tho very scenes were before their eyes. It is sincerely to be hoped that Mr Wilson will again favour the society with one of his most Interesting and instructive lectures befora long. The President, after complimenting and thanking Mr Wilson for his valuable papet, called on one of the members to propose a vote of thanks to the lecturer. Mr Hodges responded and in moving a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Wilson, he suggested that the society should endeavour to arrange for more papers of the same nature as Mr Wilson's. A hearty vote of thanks wai then accorded to Mr WiUon by the members, do which he suitably responded. The meeting was then closed by the Rev. Mr Sutherland pronouncing the benediction.
