MILTON.

June 10.— A trial of digging ploughs was held her on Monday, 9th inst., in a field of Mr R. Fergusson's just outside the township. The land was in excellent condition, being dry and level. Uhere were two machines on the ground— one of Reid and Gray's make, Dunedin, and a Howard plough, which was being looked after by Mr James Reid, of Oamnru. In the opinion of many of the onlookers the Howard plough did the neatest and cleanest work, and worked more smoothly than Reid and Gray's. This was evidently due to the presence of an expert with the Howard, who kept Its gearing in order. Otherwise there was nothing to choose between the two, as both did excellent work. There was a large attendance of farmers, many of whom were so delighted with the work that they intend fixing the '•skim coulters" to their ordinary double-furrow ploughs which can be done at slight expense. Both ploughs intend being represented at the forthcoming ploughing match to be held here on the 4th prox, Amusements.— A concert and dance afc Fairfax last PYidiy was liberally patronised. The proceeds, which go towards the sohool funds, amounted to £16 14s. The performers were all local artists, and the novelty Itself attracted the larger part of the audience. — The fir»t of this winter's series of Silver Readings was held in the A' henseum on Saturday last. There was a large audience, the building being crowded. The feature of the evening was the singing of Mrs Thomas King, who made her first appearance before a Milton audience on this occasion.
