BROAD BAY.

June 9.— A very successful conoert in aid of the school funds was held in the schoolroom on Friday last, Mr R. Huie in the ohnir. The performers who kindly gave their services were Misses Moss and Reid, a duet and solo songs ; Miss Neil, two solos with violin accompaniment ; Misses Raeburn and Wellbourn, a song each ; Miss B. Raynbird, two recitations ; Misses W. and M. Green, an organ solo and recitation, respectively ; Messrs Henderson and M'Lennan, readings ; Mr A. Moss, song; Mr D. H. Leith, two readings ; and Mr A. Neil, a violin bolo. Every item was heartily appreciated by the audience, which closely packed the room, and Miss Rayubird and Mr Leith had to comply with the demand for encores. After the usual votes of thanks, the room was cleaned, and for several hours the young folks " tripped the light fantastic" with the assistance of Messrs Dick and Garrick as violinists, and Mr D. D. Seaton as M O. School. — At the last ordinary meeting of tbe Sohool Committee, it was resolved to call for tenders at once for the erection of a playshed, 24ft x 15ft. The shed has been badly wanted for a long time, and owing to the energy and tact of the teacher, Mr Huie, it is now assuming a practical shape. In aid of the above object, the committee acknowledges the receipt of surplus fnnds from the church choir (£2) and M.I. Soolety(£3). 8.8 M.l.S.— 'this society held its first meeting thiß season at the eohool, on FViday, 30t.h'uIt , with a good attendance of members, notwithstanding tbe stormy night. The officebearers were chosen, thus : Mr.G. Greenr, president; Mr J. Barton, vice-presi-dent; and Mr A. Moss, secretary. It was reso'ved to retain the membership foe at la, ladies free. Last year the meetings wero very popular and were largely attended. AoßtcufUßAi.. — The season continues unusually mild and dry. keeping tfie settlers busy preparing ground for, aud planting early potatoes. Spring fiowers, too — violets, primroses, &c — are making their appearance, w>th blackbirds and thrushes tuning away, apparently with a view to encourage fruit" growers for next summer.
