A BIG SCORE. London, May 17. In the county cricket match against Sussex, Nottinghamshire scored 590 runs. Shrewsbury made 267, and Gunn 196. The score stood at 398 when the second wicket fell. In their first innings against Warwickshire the Australians made 89, the highest scorers being Lyon (25) and Gregory (not out, 18). In the second innings they scored 133— Lyons 34, Jones 14, Walters 14, Turner 24. Warwickshire in their first innings made 38 and in their second 51. The wicket, drying after saturation, was in favour of the bowlers, and Turner was simply unplayable. In the first innings of Warwickshire Turner took six wickets for 17 runs and Ferris three for 17. The weather was wet, and the innings of the local eleven closed for 141. Dr W. G. Grace scored 15. In the first innings of Mr Laverton's Eleven Reed made 19 and Peel 20. Turner took four wickets for 80 runs, and Ferris six for 58. In their first innings the Australians have lost nine wickets for 66 runs. Lohmann and Briggs bowled splendidly, the latter taking six wickets. After the recent rain the wicket was difficult for batsmen. The fielding of the Australians was bad, but that of the local team was excellent. London, May 16. In the match against Mr W. H. Laverton's Eleven the Australians' innings concluded for 67 runs. Mr Laverton's team, in their second venture, have put together 146 runs for three wickets. Kadcliffe made 93. May 17. The cricket match between the Australians and Mr Laverton's Eleven resulted in the defeat of the colonials by 181 runs. Mr Laverton's team, with three wickets down for 146, resumed their innings, the last wicket falling with the score at 223. Dr W. G. Grace played a splendid innings of 64. Ferris bowled exceedingly well, taking six wickets at a cost of 69 runs. Turner took four for 82. The fielding of the visitors was only medium. The Australians required 297 runs to save a defeat, but in their second innings were all disposed of for 116. Turner played a brilliant innings of 47, and Lyons made 24 in dashing style. The next highest scorer was Gregory, who made 18. The fielding of Mr Laverton's team was excellent, and two of the Australians were dismissed by splendid catches. Briggs took four wickets for 49, and Lohmann four for 44. The rain which fell during portion of [ the match rendered the wicket- treacherous, and losing the toss meant losing the match. The wicket during each innings of Mr Laverton's Eleven was in splendid condition. May 19. The match between the Australians and Oxford University began to-day. The Australians went in first and succeeded in putting together the respectable score of 234. Lyons played a lucky innings for 33, and Murdoch made 45 in quite his old stylish form. Besides these — Turner (59), Charlton (41),^nd Ferris (not out, 34) hit the bowling about freely. The weather was showery. The University made a bad start, losing four wickets for three runs in the short time that remained for play.
