OPHIR.
May 12.— The annual meeting of householders, as appointed by the Education Board, was held in the schoolroom, Ophir, on Monday evening, the 28th April. After the annual report had been read and adopted, candidates were 'nominated for the new committee, the following seven gentlemen being elected : —Messrs Bryan, Plannery, John Pitches, Samuel Hanger, Nathan Peacock, John M'Knight, Charles Young, and Wm. Waldron. Bank Premises,— The contract for building the premises of the Bank of New South Wales here has been let to Mr Wilkinson, contractor at St Bathans. I have not been able to ascertain the exact figure, but I believe it is over £1000. Mr Wilkinson is pußhing forward the timher, &c, and hopes to make an early start with the building. His time to finish is four months. The bank portion of the old premises was removed bodily on Saturday t;o the adjoining section belonging to Mr Pitches. The other portions are to be sold and removed at once, the manager having rented a cottage to live in until the new premises are finished. WBATHEH.—The weather during the past few days has been cold and miserable, with the wind from the south-west. The hills are covered with a thick coating of snow, which I have no doubt will remain with us all through the winter. A Resident Doctor. — I understand that at last %\ o are about to have a doctor resident iv this town. Since Dr Hyde left Ophir, some twelve months
since, to take up the Clyde practice, we have beea without one, and have bad to depend upon the services of the dootor at Clyde when any person was ill. A gentleman who resides in Australia is at present negotiating with the Blacks Medical Committee, and it is to be hoped that arrangements will be completed with the least possible delay. The practice, though the district is extensive, is a good one, being variously estimated at between £500 and £600 per year with a good house.
