WAIKAIA.

May 12.— A seriouß fire took place on Mr P. Russell's farm on the 4th inst., resulting in the total destruction of five large stacks of oats— the whole season's crop. The fire was noticed first about 6.30, and as the grain was about half a mile from any house, t had a great hold before anyone reached it, bo that nothing could be done. There was no insurance, and it is uncertain how the fire originated.

TheGbain Season.— Grain carting is now at its height ; a great number of teams are on the road, aud farmers seem anxious to get their produce away befoie the winter seta in. It is the intention of a good many to store, in hopes of batter prices ; but some believe in the old proverb about the bird. If the farmer can afford it he could not go far wrong by keeping a good proportion of his oats for a time at least Weather. — The spell of dry weather we have had is now broken. In a good many instances the water supply was very low, and mining was almost at a standstill.
