THE EUREKA CLAIM.

,The following letters have appeared in the Daily Times :— • Sih,— l would like' to say' a few words in reference to the great Eureka claim, Nerithoro, if you can spare me space in yonr valuable columns. A few days since appeared a letter signed "Diogenes." All honest men, shareholders in' the Eureka, should feel grateful that "Diogenes" had the temerity to ask such questions. Unfortunately J should a man speak the truth concerning some of the ventures here he would be voted an obstructionist, or one who is trying to injure the district. At preßent I have no wish to take part in the controversy re size of reef in Eureka shaft, but simply advise shareholders who have purchased scrip to employ a practical miner, empower him to make a thorough examination of the property, and if the shareholders do not insist on a refund of their money I am sadly mistaken. Mr Hislop's remarks make matters utill worse. Why fill up the shaft with 'dirt when it is already full of water ? Surely water would scare away the alleged specimen hunters. Clean out the shaft and see what is there. This course will prove matters more satisfactorily than writing letters to the press. — I am, &c., Nenthorn, August 10. Mines. Sir, — Surely " Diogenes" would not wish the abovenamed company to go to the very unnecessary expense of clearing out an old shaft that has fallen in for no other purpose whatever than to satisfy his curiosity — which curiosity has been awoke by a whisper that was surely meant to mislead those who were weak enough to pay any attention to it. As the company are about to call tenders for the sinking of a shaft in the mine, it would be utter foolishness to clean out the old shaft, that would be no good when it was cleaned out, except to allow "Diogenes" to see the reef at the bottom of it. I will admit that your correspondent has a right to inquire into the position of the lode in the company's claim ; but to still doubt the true width of reef as stated in the prospectus, and as it is to be seen in the claim, is more than what any man with honest intention would do. If " Diogenes " will come to Nenthorn I will give him help to clear out the old shaft, that is, if the company allows us to do so; but it is madness to wish the company to be at the expense of clearing it out to gratify idle curiosity. About the width of reef I will not speak, as it would be impossible to satisfy your correspondent in that respect ; but as he seems bent on having the shaft cleared out, I dare say that the directors may arrange that matter to his entire satisfaction, if he only wait 3 long enough. — I am, &c, Nenthorn, August 15. Prospector.
