WAIKAIA
January 10. — The scorching weather we have been having still continues; and everything has, judging from present prospects, a good chance of being dried up. Rain is badly wanted, and unless a change occurs, some damage will, I am afraid, be sustained.
Railway. — A party of surveyors have been up pegging the. line and surveying the different levels. There will not be much cuttiug away required, as the ground is nearly level thewhole way ; so that the money voted should .cover the outlay. We have been promised that the contraot will be let this month , 'and all hope that this will actual]) prove to be tho case.
Athenjbum. — A strong committee of nine was elected at the annual meeting, with the' Rev. W. Panton Brown as president. The athensoum is in a comparatively healthy financial condition. Many donations of books, &c, have been received during the year. The subscription is to be lowered to half the former amount, so as to give everyone a chance °of joining, and as new books are constantly being procured, the residents should lose no time iv embracing the opportu* * : ty thus afforded them.
