WYNDHAM.

January 10. — The appointing of a successor to Mr J. Williamsou, who recently resigned thehead mastership of the Wyndham schooli has resulted in the selection of Mr Clarke (Dipton). In the first place Mr R. Cowan, of the Arthur street school, Dunedin, was unanimously recommended by the committee for appointment. However, it appears that that gentleman had iuadvertently forwarded his testimonials direct to the school committee, merely intimating to the Education Board the fact that he was ono of the applicants for the vacancy. Tho Education Board entirely ignored the committee's recommendation, and returned the applications of several other candidates. -AJ meeting was held, •and I believe the Education Board's action was commented on In anything but comnttmontary t'sfijis. when one learns that the board did not even give a reason for adopting this course of procedure. The committee wrote asking on what grounds the board refused to give effect to their recommendation, but I believe got no satisfaction ; so they were compelled to make a choice from one of the other applicants. From all accounts Mr Clarke will prove a worthy successor to our late and much respected teacher. • Library. — The annual meeting of the members of the Wyndham Library took place on Wednesday last, the Rev. R. Wood being in the chair. The report and balance sheet was approved of, and the following committee was elected for the enduing term: — Rev. R. Wood (chairman), R Paull, H. Iw, D. M'Kay, H. Dolamore, H. Purvis, and J. M'Bride (secretary and treasurer). Since the library has been removed to its present abode— at the shop .of Mr J. S. Evans — the circulation has been greatly increased and the members' roll largely augmented.

An Unsolved Mystery.— The mysterious disappearance of Mr J. Y. Hall from his run adjoining Glenham last October is still a subject of doubt and anxiety here. The property and that adjoining has been thoroughly well searched without the slightest trace being discovered. Many opinions are expressed aB to the probable fate of the missing man, but in the absence of facts one can but resort to conjecture. The most reasonable supposition is that when " footing it " round his boundary and haviug his gun with him he has probably g : ven chase to a wild boar and been attacked and ripped, or else that he has lost his way in attempting to return. Much sympathy is expressed for his family and friends, as all hope of the recovery of his body, for which a reward of £50 is offered, is now despaired of. Racing. — At a meeting of the Wyndham Jockey Club held on Monday last the resignation of Mr R. Kidd as president was accepted and regret expressed that such an enthusiastic patron of the turf had seen fit to release himself from harness. Tho cause of Mr Kidd's retirement is, I believe, the postponement of the races from New Year's Day to a later date. Mr J. C. Plaißted was unanimously elected to the vacancy caused by Mr Kidd's resignation, Mr T. Gollen to the position of judge, and Messrs Monaghan, Preston, and Winter handicappers. List year's programme was revised at some length and several alterations effected. A trotting race is inserted for horses plying with milk to the dairy factories of Eileudale ami Wyndham. Altogether about £90 will be given away. Cricket. — A cricket match was played here between the First Eleven of the club and Twenty-two, comprising several members, on Thursday and Friday last. The latter team proved the victors by nearly 40 runs, M'Arthur'b bowling being too good for the eleven. A return match is talked about at an early date.

Dairy Factory. — I learn that last month over 60,000 gals of milk were delivered at the local factory — over £1000 paid for it, some of the milk cheques being as much as £80. The cheese manufactured by Mr Stobo was fortunate in securing first prize at the Gore show, beating thelnch-Clutha(M'lnnes') and Gore (Robbing) The directors have sold about 30 tons at a satisfactory figure, and I learn that a good offer has be^'i bubmitted for the balance of the season's make
