AUSTRALIAN.

A wire from Adelaide states that The Plunger has beeu purchased by Mr Hunter fur 1000 guineas, and Little Jack has been sold to Mr VVeekes for 300 aovs. On the first day of the Adelaide Racing Club's meeting Mr E. Weekes' colt Transferred, by Maribynong— -Lady Elizabeth, won the Trial Handicap and the Totalisator Handicap very easily. Darebin'a half brother Prometheus, by Tubal Cain— Lurline, started for the St. Leger with odds of 5 to 2 on him, but finished last of three in the bad time of 3 mm 30 sees. The winner was Mr Mortlock's Royal Irishman, by Irish King — Vivandiere, and Mr Jordan's Standard Hearer ran second. On the second day the Birthday Cup was won by Mr Weekes' Little Jack (7ht 71b), with Footstep (7st 61b) second, Coriolanus (7st 81b) and OJaptrap (6sfc 7lb) a dead heat for third place. At the same meeting some excitement was created in the paddock by Mr Joseph Thompson, the bookmaker, refusing to pay 10 guineas for the privilege of betting within tho enclosure. The lessees eventually had him expelled the paddock, but Thompson returned again and commenced betting. Mr O'Brien was then ordered out, but did not go, and it appears in his instance tho lessees proceeded no further. The Sportsman says that whether it is wise on the part of the ring to set itself in hostile opposition to a racing club remains with its members to determine. But there does seem to be a question and doubt a3 to the right to levy the charge, because the Adelaide Racing Club is not a properly constituted club, but rather a proprietary affair which is not considered to enjoy the same rights and privileges. As Mr Thompson, however, has commenced proceedings againßt the Club, and estimated the loss of dignity and business at £5000, the case will soon be decided and set at rest. A very strong bar has been retained, the services of Mr J. L Purves, the barrister, having been also secured. Messrs W. C. Yuillo and Co. report the sale of the entire horse RapiditcS, and the brood mare Eugenic to Captain Hairnea, for the sum of £2000. Rapidity is by the imported horse Tim Whiiner, and Eugenic (impoitsd) is by Thormanby from Piiri&ienne. Thus Mr Haimos has at one blow secured the siro and dam of the crack two-year-old " Archie," whom he sold after the Spring meeting to Mr Smart, of Sydney, for a couple of thousand. It is rumoured — but generally disbolieved —that Mr De Moetre will sell off the whole of hie racing stock at Sydney next Spring.

Mr Weekes has backed Sting to wia the next Champion race. Martin- Houri, tho high-priced Muaket — Chry.sohte coJt, purchased in N&w Zealand by the Hon. .lames White, is in capiUl case to begin his intended Derby preparation. Charley Bannerman, the cricketer, has joined the betting-ring. There is a little stir in Sydney over Sting's win in the Adelaide Cup. It appears that there were several wagers booked very late, and it is thought that the taker had information of the winner before he had the wager booked. It is said that someone in the Tolegave tha information. The Sydney Turf Club's Birthday Cup waa won by Mr J. Monagrhati's Sardonyx (Bst 91b), with Morpeth (Bst 71b) second, Normanby (6st Gib) third.
