THE LONDON MARKETS.

Tho New Zealand Loan aud Mercantile Agency Company report on February 10th as follows :—

During the past fortnight tho wheat market has been dull, with a slow trade. Supplies of botu Home-grown and imported produce have been large, while the demand has been generally of a purely retail character. The stringency recently existing in financial affairs has to some extent increased the anxiety of speculators to realise their holdings, and at the samo tune limited the resources of buyers, so that forward business has been almost at a standstill, and cargoes , ,irnv«d off coast have been difficult to place. In spite, however, of the declining values exports from Ca'ifornia and India continue to be very liberal. With adequate stocks in granary, considerable prospective supplies, and a satisfactory outlook with regard to tho growing crop, the indisposition to largo commitments on the part of millers and others is not perhaps uuwar- , ranted.

iieuuiit telegrams from Victoria give the quotation 1 for wheat as 5s 2d per bushel, with supplies coining . forward to the Beaboard insufficient for the tonnage , in port, and the absence of first-hand sellers of Australian cargoes is therefore not surprising. There are, however, boveral re-sellers in the market at s ls Cd to 51s 9d for January B-L, with a few buyers at 51s to 51s 3d. The London market is at present without supplies of this description. iNciv Zealand cargoes for March- April shipment aro put forward at 49s 6d, and business is said to have been clone last week at about that figure, but thero., would be no buyers to-day at over 48s. The Helen r Denny, with a shipment of wheat from Otago, V irrived at FalmouUi on 2nd inst., and was ordered to „ London. '■*

Oats continue dull, in consequence of the open weather and heavy European supplies. Quotations f ir .» her cereals are only nominal in tho absence of stocks. l Xo-uay's quotations ex granary are as follow:— . South Australian whuat ■>(„. .„ „,. .mon. Victorian ]50i to 57s per 496lb --> • New Zealand, long-berried 54s „ 56s „ „ averago .. 52s „ 54s „
