First Day.—March 16th.

! Napikr, March 16th. The first day's races of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club took place yesterday, and were a great success. About 3000 people were present. The weather was splendid, and the racing grand, The results were :— \ MAIDEN PLATE, Of 60 boys. One mile and a-half. Betting: Even on Lady Emma, 2 to 1 against Mischief, 3 to 4 to 1 others, Louie not being mentioned. This was a j magnificent race, resulting in the most complete boil-over ever seen in Hawke's Bay. Mischief cut out the running, but soon fell back, and the whole field raced round in a cluster until coming to the straight. It was there anyone's race, but Louie shot to the front and won by two lengths. Lady Emma was called upon, but finished fifth, and Libeller last. The totalisator showed £575, and only four or five shares on the winner. One bookmaker, just before the race, offered £100 to an orange against Louie, but no one took it up. One bet of £100 to £1 was, however, booked. Time, very fast, 3 mm. 9 sec. , NURSERY PLATE, Of 100 soys ; for two-year-olds. Five furlongs.

Lady Emma (Sst 101b), Libeller (Bst 21b), Soukar (7st 101b), My Dream (6st 121b), Mavis (6st 121b), Dan (7st Mb), and Kincraig (6st 51b), also ran. The betting waß 5 to 2 agst Luna, 3 to 1 agst Louie, Mavis, and Lady Emma. This was a splendid race. After a mile had been traversed Luna went to the front, Louie lying second, Dan third, and the rest in a cluster close up. She and Prim raced into the straight, Luna having always the best of it, and she won a capital race by a couple of lengths. Time, 2 mm. 43£ sec. There were 222 in the totaliaator, in £2 shares, 49 being on the winner.
