First Day.— March 4th.

THE PORT PHILLIP STAKES,

A sweepstakes of 10 soys each, with 300 added. For four-year-olds and upwards. Weight for age. Two miles ar.d a half. Mr W. Branch's bh Progress, 4 yrs, by Angler, M (Moore) 1

Betting : 6to 4 each agst Bathurst and Wellington, 2 to 1 agst Progress. The horses went away in a very leisurely manner, Wellington going to the front ; Progress (who was with difficulty held back) was second. Rounding the far turn Wellington had a lead of half a dozen lengths ; Progress and Bathurst were next together ; Guinea was following, about four lengths off. The horses ran past the abattoirs and sheds in the same order, the pace being only moderate. As they passed the stand, Wellington was leading by six lengths; the others were following close together, with Bathurst at their head. Soon after rounding the turn past the stand, the horses went close up to Wellington, who increased his pace as they came on. At the bridge, Progress went up to second place, and rounding the far turn he was close up to Wellington ; Bathurst and Guinea were together, about a couple of lengths off. As they passed the abattoirs, Progress was level with Wellington, and on reaching the sheds, he was in front. The pace now became very fast, and Guinea was out of it at once. Progress led into the straight ; Wellington and Bathurst were close up. Bathurst passed Wellington as they came on, but though he made a good effort, he could never get fairly up to Progress, who won by about half a length. at the post, turned round, and lost fully six or. seven lengths. As they came on, Allander showed well forward, with the Drone close up; Brilliant was also well forward. Crossing the last tan track Navigator and Solitude were in front on the left ; Transferred and Boolka were leading on the right. Approaching the distance Navigator came away in front, Boolka and Solitude were well up ; Brilliant, Guesswork, and Allander were next. Navigator won very comfortably by three lengths, Boolka was second, a couple of lengths in front of Solitude ; Brilliant, Allander, Magnet, and Guesswork, were next in that order. Half-way home Sweet William came up with a grand spurt, challenged Pollio, who at once compounded, and won vory easily by three lengths. Pollio was second, Star of the West third, Result 4th, Zambeßi sth,' Mulatto Gth, and King Lud 7th, all close together. Time, 2 mm. lOf sec.

Darebin was leading as they headed for the abattoirs j ,Pell Mell and Commotion were very close up, Santa Olaus followed after a gap of four lengths. Koh-i-noor was next, and Royal Maid was well behind. As they passed the abattoirs Darebin had a decided lead, but by the time they reached the sheds, Commotion was nearly level with him, and Pell Mell was' very close up j Santa Claus and Koh-i-noor were about half-a-dozen lengths away. Approaching the turn for home, Commotion and Pell Mell were racing Darebin for the lead. Darebin led into the straight ; Pell Mell and Commotion, who were both going under the whip, were very close up. Darebin held the lead, and looked all over a winner till about half way home, where Commotion got level with him, and before reaching the distance Commotion was in the front. Power made an ineffectual call on Darebin, ' and was passed by Pell Mell. Commotion \von by half a length ; Pell Mell, who was not ridden out, was second, half a length in front of .Darebin; Santa Claus was a poor fourth, Koh-i-noor fith, and Royal Maid sixth. Second Day.— March 9th.

Melbourne, March 9th. The second day's racing of the Victoria Racing Club's Autumn meeting came off to-day at Flemington. For the Australian Cup 22 horses started— namely, First Water, Hesperian, Belladrum, Suwarrow, Pollio, Odd Trick, Waterloo, Napper Tandy, Coriolanus, Wellington, Saunterer, Royal Maid, Crystal, Blue Ribbon, Sweet William, Attache, Gloucoster, Wren, Narrabri, Westbury, Elsinore, and Duchess.

The betting was 2 to 1 agst Sweet William, and 10 to 1 agst any other. The race resulted as follows : —

AUSTRALIAN CUP, A handicap sweepstakes of 20 soys each, 10 ft, or 6 only if declared, with 300 f dded. For three-year-olds and upwards. Two and a-quarter miles. '
