NAUTICAL ITEMS.

We condense from Mitchell's Register :— The triil of % torpedo vessel, the Light ling, was made in Stokes Bay on May 24, and the mean Bpeed of her six runs was 18$ knots per hour. She is 84ft. long by 10ft. lOin. beam, and is to be armed with the Wlnteheid torpedo, which will be discharged from her forecastle. Thi3 torpedo travels at the rate of 20 knots at any depth from lft. t > 30ft , and can be set to explode either on striking an object or at any particular distance within 1000 jards

The death of Mr George Marshall, the well-known shipowner, is announced. He hsd be#n connected with the shipping interest for over half a century, and died on May 20th, at the age of 75. Mr Marshall was a member of Lloyd's Kegistry of British and Foreign Shipping-, and was Chairman of the General Shipowners' Society.

Two British steamers, the Karitana and Moldavia, bouud to Russian ports in the Black Sea with coal cargoes, have been stopped at Constantinople by the Tui kish authorities because their cargoes were deemed to be contraband of war. From the tenor of a leader upon the subject in the Register of May 25th, we infer that considerable haziness exists at home as to what is, ant what 13 not, contraband of war outside of curse absolute munitions of war. Our contemporary says— "lt is of course not forgotten, that within ihe past month the Under-Sccret->ry of Foreign Affair* stated dictinctly, that .Her Majesty's Government could not call upon either bellitrtrent to define what is, or what is not, contraband of war, and the Queen's proclamation is silent on the subject, and saye as regards supplies of men, munitions of war, and ships of war, or those that may be converted to warlike purpose. Turks and Russians are therefore alike at liberty to define the teim contraband of war, or rather to treat all articles, however innocent, as contraband, according to their destination, or really according to the caprice of nther belligerent, or of the court of prize which he may think proper to establish."
