THE INVERCARGILL CHAMPION PLOUGHING MATCH.

The above match was held at Mr Mortin's farm, Oatlands, Wallacetown, known as the racecourse, on Friday, August 10. The weather was favourable for the onlookers, of whom there were a large number, but the hard frosfc kept the work back for nearly two hours. The turn-out not only comprised local ploughmen and their friends, but was supplemented by a fair quota of visitors aud competitors from Winton and the Western district, and it is our pleasing duty to chronicle that our local "cracks" gave an excellent account of themselves, Mr David Younger carrying off the two best prizes, and Mr Jamea Hay taking a fourth. With the exception of two or three of the winning lots, the general character of the work was not equal to that of the late match at Groper's Bush. In the double-furrow class, Mr Younger's piece was much admired. He and four others having competed for the special prizes for the best break, had to make their own scratches. The lot in the single furrow that claimed the greatest amount of attention was M'lllwrick's, which, was considered one of the moat magnificent pieces of ploughing done in Southland. Altogether, the match may be said to have come off most succeasf ully, and reflects every credit on the Committee. The dinner was held at Mr Powell's Hotel, Wallacetown, in the evening, when between 60 and 70 gentlemen sab down to a capital spread. At the conclusion of the dinner the room was cleared for dancing. — Riverton Western Star.
