NIGHTCAPS NOTES.

» From Our Own Correspondent i The report of the opposition to the Electric Power scheme by members of the Town Board m last week's news should not have been iucluded m tho repoifc of the Town Buard, 'as the matter formed part; of a disoussion after the business of the meeting was finished. Mr Sinclair was not at the Invercargill Conference as a delegate from tli3 Nightcaps Town Board. "If the Elect: ie Power sohemo affords "as good an opportunity to lawyers as the Ohai Railway scheme^as done, well, tho mutter will bo worth keeping m front of tho public occasionally for that object alone. The • Coronation Hall on Wednesday niaht was occupied by? Professor Barraden, of hypuotic fame. There was a largo attendance, it being Wairio Race Day. The evening's programme consisted of throe of tho Professor's own subjects going through various tests, and displaying marvellous ingenuity under the influence of hypnotism/ At the commencement of the entertainment anyone m the audience who wished to come under the influence was given an invitation to go on the platform, but there was no response, which, as matters turned out, later on, was a pity. Towards the clos j of the entertainment there wore .those m tho audience who would have liked to b>3 put under the influence Jof hypnotism, but Professer Barraden refused as the hour was late and he was feeling spent. There followed an_ uproar which was continued until the close of the entertainment. The Professor has offered to return here and ( givo any members of the public another i chance of accepting an invitation on to the ! 3fcago, who feel inclined to come under his hypnotic influence. A Welcome Home to several of " Our Boys " was held on Saturday. There was a, fair attendance, Mr Todd presiding. On the platform were the returned { soldiers belonging to here, who received tho customary gold medal presented by the Chair-' man on behalf of the residents of NightBaps. Corporal Wilson replied on behalf of his comrades. The following programme was carried out : Pianoforte overture, Miss Grey ; eong, Mr Harris ; song, Miss Dixon ; Dance, little Miss Parks, encored ; song, Mr Sandri, encored ; violin solo, Miss Patterson ; song, Miss N. Dixon ; song, Mr A*. Clapp, encored/? dance, Miss Parks ; song, Mr J. Grant. A dance followed, which continued until midnight. A paper was read during the evening by Rir Peaples, intimating that if anyone would like to become a voluntary Red Cross woiker for a few months, to proceed to [nvorcargill centre, and there work m conjunction with others, to make application to Mies Grey, Hon. Seereiary Nightcaps Red Cross, who would give all particulars. At the regular mooting of this branch of the War Funds Association, held last Thursday, fchore were" present : Mr James Grant, Senr. Chairman, Miss Gray, Acting Secretary, Messrs J. G. Johnstone, T. Todd, P. Grant, A. Malcolm, W. Boyle, and D. Sinclair, Junr. Among the matters considered was that cf commencing a returned soldier, who had three years of active service to his credit, iii the, boot-making business. The Invercargill Patriotic Committee will help to finance the business probably if good support is forthcoming '■ from Nightcaps. ■ One member of the local ' committee took exception«»to the aotionof bringing another business man into the township to oppose an already existing boot-business. As this boot shop is m tho hands of an unuaturalised German, . who only settled hero prior, to the war, the temper of the meeting showed itself m no unmistakable manner, and there was immediately forthcoming guarantees^ for an amount almost sufficient to set up the soldier boot-maker. This district has a boot trade sufficient to give a good living to a good tradesman, and the German can go back to Germany oa he only got a certain portion of trade, when all is said and done.
