SATURDAY’S TOURNAMENT
LOCAL PERFORMERS The high standard of boxing set in the first tournament of He season was maintained when »n all amateur tournament was staged by the .Hawera Boxing and Sports Club on Saturday night at Hawera. The large attendance was Heated to an excellent night’s entertainment. Scientific boxing was mixed with solid punching and a feature was the fitness of ; the boxers. Most of the contestants were evenly matched and only one bout’did not go to the full distance. The referees were Messrs. R. Gray (Rahotu) and E. Griffin (Inaha). The judges were. Messrs. L. R. Davies (Kaponga). F. Ryan (Inglewood), A. Hm rell (Hawera) and B. Clement (Eltham). Performances of District Boxers Using his southpaw stance to good advantage, B. Whalen, Otakeho (4.13) scored a clear points decision over B. Taylor, Waitara (4.10). Both the boys fought at a fast clip, and although Taylor covered up well and scored with a straight left, he could not figure out Whalen’s unusual stance. Scoring equally well with both hands to the head and body, G. Rowlands, Waterside, obtained a clear points decision over C. Hampton, Opunake. (9.0). Another hara-punching bout fought at a fast pace was between 1). Chapman, Opunake, (6.2) and P. McGlade,'Hawera, (6.5). It resulted in a narrow points win for McGlade, The two* boxers were veiy evenly matched but McGlade’s aggressiveness was the deciding factor.
