SUCCESSFUL CONCERT

BAND PRESENTATION

SPLENDID PROGRAMME

Assisted by several local artists, me Upunake Federal Band, under tke conduetorship 01 jij . J. Humphries, presented a splendid concert programme in lb'-' sew Theatre on Sunday evening. The function was under the direction of Mr. A. L. Herdman, (i member of the district committee of physical welfare, whose funds, benefited £rom_ the concert. At an appropriates stage, Mr. T. P.. Hughson, jiuir., who acted as chairman, o'lnveved thanks to members of the band and to the artists for their services in supplying items, and the audience which was of good proportions also expressed its appreciation in hearty fashion. Opportunity was taken by the band to rehearse in public for the first time the, numbers which will be played at the forthcoming brass bands contest. After the National Anthem, the march "Victoria" was rendered and this is the piece which will be played on the march in the (pack-step event. The hymn "New Rochdale" is that chosen for the hvmn test, and the selection "Martha," a further contest choice, also was rendered. All these numbers were played with the same excellent _ technique and finish which gained for the band first place, in the events contested last year, and the audience was well satisfied that Opunake Ims again a splendid prospect of success. Other items rendered by the band were the hymn "Farewell" and the marcn "Vanguard."

Local vocalists who supplied the supporting- programme included the talented boy opran.o, Master Maurice Clare. His first number was the difficult "Pipes of Pan" from the musical comedy "The Arcadians," and the rollicking song "Goodbye" from the stage piece "White Horse Inn." The popular male trio comprising Messrs. D. Thomas, 11. 11. Hughson and C. Maindonald rendered the items "The Old Rustic Bridge" and "Sweet and Low," and Mr Maindonald. contributed two solos "Thora" and "Friend of Mine." The pianoforte accompaniment was played by Mr. W. D. Richards. The whole programme was one which was fully appreciated , # by the audience and if a similar function is held some time in the near future, further success is assured.
