CLASH WITH JAPAN
AMERICAN PREDICTION COL. KNOX RETICENT BUILDING UP FLEET’ (News by Cable.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 9. Asked: “Do you concur that the United States will be at war with Japan on October 17” as stated by one newspaper, the Secretary of tin Navy, Colonel Frank Knox, replied : “I do not concur, I do not think anybody knows.” Colonel Knox announced that 4200 recruits were returning to Hawai with tho first Heel, contingent for building up. tho crews to 100 per cent, of the strength, compared with the present 82 per cent. He added : “The plan to mobilise, 27,000 reservists is proceeding. Thirty local defence divisions will be called up as quartern arc available. The Hoc divisions are, mobolisirig as the ships arc obtained.”
