SHARP EARTHQUAKE
YESTERDAY’S VISITATION j ROLLING MOTION The heaviest earthquake felt in Opotiki for some year’s was recorded at about 1.25 yesterday afterernoon. The direction of the shakes appeared to be directly east and west, the movements being of a heavy rolling motion. The earthquake commenced with only light movements, these continuing for about ten seconds, when the motion suddenly became heavier. There was a slight easing off and then a heavy kick! came, the shock then gradually dying away. Delicately balanced objects showed that there was very slight movements for several minutes afterwards. No damage of any consequence has 1 been reported, although' crockery which had been put insecurely away was broken, in one house. A little plaster fell from the ceiling in an office, while goods were also dislodged in the shop of Messrs. Shalfoon and Francis.
Most people moved outside when the shocks became strong and were able to see buildings swaying while electric and telephone wire: joggled for some - time. Electric lights swayed for some time after the shakes died away. There was uo alarm at the school, most of the children remaining inside, although some were told to go outside.
