Capetown, November 29

Lord Methuen officially reports that his forces defeated 8000 Boers at the Modder River on Tuesday last after despavate fighting lasting ten hours.

He says it was one ot the hardest and most trying fights in the annals of the British army.

The Boers were strongly entrenched with a number of heavy guns, and outflanking was impossible.
