MINING NEWS.

WAIHI-SILVEETON. £1171 FOR THE MONTH. The crushing return from, this mine for the past month was announced to-day, 672 tons, having yi lded 5650z of bullion, valued at £1171. ■, A memo was added from the manager, stating: —'• Last month's poor output is attributable to accidents, which are easily repaired. The previous yield was £14.00 from 800 tons. A less tonnage of ore was treated this month, but the average value was about the same." WAITEKAUEI PEINCE. At an extraordinary general meeting jof shareholders in the Waitekauri Prince Goldmining Company, held on Friday at the Bank of New Zealand, building,-Mr Sargent presiding, it was resolved to authorise the directors to sell the mine on such terms as they might think fit. WAIHI NEW CLAIMS. The taking up of leases for mining purposes in the district lying north of the Waihi Extended and Ohinemuri and extending to the La Masootte and Mataura, is steadily proceeding, and very soon the whole of the land vacant there will be pegged. North of the | Ohinemuri the Three Cheers has beertapplied for, and joining that the Investment and St. George. These three have been taken up on the strength of the loose quartz lying over the surface and the supposed line they are in with the Waihi and Grand Junction. Another claim lately applied for is the Star of Honor, adjoining Stackpole's Caledonian and the Waihi Central and Paul Jones. This ground consists of , solid sandstone country, shown in a small creek traversing the ground. This creek is full of quartz boulders, large and small, and what appears to be an outcrop of quartz is showing at one point near .the foot, of a very high spur. This spur is fully 600 feet high, an-f the quartz is of k different class t > that found in the Oinuku or Martha Extended, being very smooth grained and streaked with blue. This pa ft of the peninsula is steadily proving itself, and-the little prospecting done so far goes to show that the whole of the district is auriferous. The centre of it is only distant from Waihi township about two miles, so that it i$ easy of access. GOLD FEYEE IN THE NOETH. A Kawakawa correspondent writes :'. I suppose it is, scarcely necessary for me to tell you that the • gold fever' is thoroughly, 'on' all over the North. Everywhere one goes, the conversation is sure to turn on mining, and nearly every man you meet has his pockets filled with what he calls quartz, though which in many cases turns out to be nothing richer than scoria stone. Though I myself have not yet caught the ' fever ' I must admit I have been very near it. One find, namely, the Eed Slip, seems to have very bright prospects of turning out trumps. A quantity of stuff has been sent to Auckland to be tested, the result of which will arrive in due course, when I hope to have something more satisf aptory to acquaint you with. Morgan's farm at Euapekapeka, a few miles distant, has also been taken over by a Eawakawa syndicate, and work has commenced this week.
