SALE OF CARPETS
High Prices For Damaged
Axminster
As in other centres in the Dominion, carpets have been in extremely short supply in Dunedin for years. With apparently little prospect of any substantial improvement for some time, those setting up homes have been compelled to pay what is often an extravagant price for the very much worn article offered at auction sales Good quality Axminster and Wilton carpets have been bringing prices that would have seemed almost fantastic 10 years ago. The auction sale of three rolls of Axminster body carpet, which were offered by Alex. Harris, Ltd., yesterday afternoon, attracted a big crowd and there was some spirited bidding. Due warning was given by the auctioneer that the carpet, each lot of which comprised about 52 yards, had been seriously damaged by salt water. The first lot sold for £26, the second for £2B and the third for £3l. Considering the condition of the carpet, these prices must have come as a surprise to the vendors.
