HOCKEN LIBRARY

Extensions Planned

Redecoration and shelf extensions in the Hoeken Library are to be carried out as soon as possible, said Mr F. H. Rogers, the Otago University librarian, in a report presented to the University Council at its meeting yesterday. He said the new shelving would relieve the serious congestion in the library but still leave sufficient space for readers. The library had acquired 224 items since October 1, 1949, he reported, one of the most interesting being a collection of 22 prints of Captain Cook purchased for £lB. Mr Rogers stated that the recataloguing of the collections was started and fully trained assistance was urgently needed. The total issue of books and periodicals for the year from the University library would probably reach 30,000, about the same as last year. A total of 71 new periodicals was added during the period September, 1949, to August, 1950.
