RONGOTAI AIRPORT
Plans For Development Under Discussion
PA WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. Plans for the alternative development of Rongotai airport, involving the shifting of the runways to an area further to the east, are under discussion. The new scheme, it is believed, would not affect either Rongotai College or the Miramar golf links. The Mayor of Wellington. Sir William Appleton, said today that boring tests at Rongotai had disclosed unsatisfactory sub-soil formations, but he added that he was not disturbed about the position. “An alternative was discussed between the late Mr Furkett (formerly engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department) and myself some years ago, and it is interesting to note that it looks as if his ideas will be put into effect.” he said. Sir William did not elaborate further on his remarks.
