WORK OF WELFARE COUNCIL

An approach is to be made to the Women’s Committee of the National Council of Churches by the executive of the Otago Old People’s Welfare Council to seek a more complete coverage of the city and suburbs in the work of giving assistance to old people. This decision was reached at a meeting of the council’s executive last night. , , ■ : The council hopes that, through the Women’s Committee, it will be able to establish contacts with all the churches throughout the various districts and be in a position, through them, to supply hot meals where required. It is also hoped to establish a service by which shopping errands can be carried out for those not in a position to do. this work for themselves. Several such cases are to be investigated. Mr R. A. Douglas reported on the progress of the work on the alterations at the Garrison Hall in Dpwling street. The carpenters were doing excellent work on a voluntary basis, he said, and the bulk of the heavy timbering work was nearly completed. As soon as suitable lining material was available, the work could be done at greater speed, he said. . The matter of provision of furnishings for the rest centre and club rooms was discussed, and a special sub-committee was set up to deal with the matter. It was hoped to have the rooms completed by September in time for the next meeting -of the full council, which would be held in the rooms, and to which an invitation to attend would be issued to interested members of the public. Sister Tingey, in charge of the district nursing service, agreed to give a 15-minute address on the problems of the care of the aged as the picture was presented to her during the course of her work. The chairman. Mr H. A. Glasson, reported on the progress of the Business Men’s Appeal Committee, headed by Mr James Hogg. He expressed pleasure at the fine progress the appeal was making.
