ENCOURAGING RESULTS
Malay Anti-Guerrilla Operations
VILLAGE HOME GUARDS PLANNED
Rec. 11.30 p.m. SINGAPORE, July 20. The director of the Malaya antiguerrilla operations, Lieutenant-gen-eral Sir Harold Briggs, said today that the Johore operations continued to be encouraging, though “ spectacular results could not be expected and results would, generally, be slow.” Lieutenant-general Briggs revealed that between June 16 and July 14, 40 terrorists were killed, eight captured, nine surrendered, and 28 persons assisting the terrorists were arrested. Operations were being intensified in the Johore, Perak and Pahang States. In the formerly terrorist-ridden Jelebu and Titi areas, banditry was practically extinguished. Psychological warfare was also being stepped up, he said, and plans for the formation of village home guards were well advanced, though careful organisation was necessary for the latter project.
