CLOSER INTEGRATION NZPA—Copyright LONDON, July 19.
The Minister of Defence, Mr Emanuel Shinwell, told Parliament today that the unified air defence organisation for Western Europe had been built up. Giving details of the extent to which Europe’s air defences had been integrated, he said the unified organisation comprised the fighter forces and control and reporting organisations of the RAF, as well as the French,, Belgian and Netherlands air forces, which were all equipped with British-type jet aircraft and radar equipment. Mr Shinwell said the air forces of Norway and. Denmark also equipped with British jet fighters and radar, formed an additional part of the air defence of the whole theatre.
The British Tactical Air Force in Germany and the British Bomber Command would be available in the defence of Europe, and would have a particular defence role to fill. Mr Shinwell said the headquarters of the Western European air force had already been formed under Air Marshal Sir James Robb, who, m the event of war, would control the air forces of the Continent, and would also have responsibilities for air defence.
